A picture postcard idyll, the village of Newton Ferrers resides around six miles south-east of Plymouth on the River Yealm Estuary. Twinned with the adjacent village of Noss Mayo, ‘Newton’ is the larger of the two villages, and is everything you would expect from a quintessential South Devon village. Brightly coloured bunting threads between houses, agapanthus sway in the river’s gentle breeze, and white-washed cottages line the waters edge. Whilst the River Yealm physically divides the villages, the ebb and flow of the estuary anchors the community, and you will find life in the village very much focused around the ways of the river.

Holidays in Newton Ferrers

Situated within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the village of Newton Ferrers showcases South Devon in its prime. With a rich sailing and fishing heritage, the spirit of its community pulses through the village, and as expected, you will find the water a hive of activity, regardless of season. Try your hand at sailing, paddleboarding or kayaking, or head down to the pontoon and watch the sailboats navigate the harbour. Wildlife is rife, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey, the occasional pod of dolphins, and at night, the dance of phosphorescents. The village itself is well equipped, and boasts a selection of shops including a Co-op, a Post Office (selling fruit, veg, magazines and clothes), a pharmacy and a butcher. What’s more, there is a cosy tea room on the village green, a popular waterside pub, and a thriving sailing club.

Newton Ferrers is perfectly situated for further exploring the region of South Devon itself, and within close proximity you will find a wealth of activities to enjoy. By foot, navigate to the South West Coast Path and tread the popular paths towards Wembury or oppositely, toward Challaborough. Visit the nearby beaches of Mothecombe, and Bigbury-on-Sea or meander the bustling harbour towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth.
