“We have stayed in this property many times since first staying at Hillfield Village in 2002.”

Whilst it is still a great place, it does require some maintenance: 1) The front door jams and needs force to open/close - my Wife who suffers from arthritis could not open the door. 2) The shower room basin plug does not work. If you close it you cannot open it again. 3) The shower room toilet flush control jams 4) The shower room radiator was covered in dripping rust at the back - we had to clean it all off as it was getting onto our towels. 5) The flooring in both bathrooms is a disgrace ...

I think the owner needs to spend some money on maintenance and update sooner rather than later.

“Wonderful property in a beautiful unusual setting.”

Only thing I’d like to add for owner is that guest’s should be made aware of the different levels in the property, and the unguarded drop of the stairs which we were concerned about with family member with mobility problems.

Big rooms, family bathroom with jacuzzi! En-suite big too &, overall furniture stylish. Kitchen has all you need & modern. Location quiet, with excellent views over the valley including from Tennis court! Parking below 1st floor flat. Dartmouth nearby, we feel in love with! Will be returning!

The only slight issue was some parts were not that clean when we arrived but nothing major to complain about. We also thought the bathrooms didn’t really match the rest of the property in decor or quality but still perfectly adequate.

“Just returned from a 5 night stay at 2 New Barn Hillfield.”

This was a last minute decision so we were a bit apprehensive about the accommodation as there were only a couple of reviews … however we found the accommodation to be very clean, quite and comfortable. There was a bottle of Rose on arrival which was a lovely touch ,Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and all the necessities you needed to start your holiday including dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, rubbish bags etc. The kitchen was well stocked with the necessary utensils and crockery, cutlery etc. The beds were very comfortable and the accommodation had an airy, modern, open plan feel. The site was clean and well run with friendly staff. No noise at all from the construction areas and this is well away from 3 New Barn so not in view . Excellent location , close to Dartmouth and the surrounding areas. We also had a courtesy call on the second day from coast and country to check all was well. Would book again! The only thing to mention for future guests is that the doors do slam so if you have a teenager with you like we did who forgets this, you have a rude awakening if you sleep before they do! soft close hinges would be the way to go otherwise it’s putting something in between the door and frame to prevent the slam. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

“We originally booked 6 court cottages but unfortunately the hot water wasn't working so we were moved to 2 new barn.”

This was a lovely apartment but had no private outside space and the 2nd bedroom wasn't ideal for 2 adults being on the small side.

“Would love to give 3.”

5 stars because definitely deserved more than 3! The property was beautiful and mainly really clean, thank you! There were a few issues which meant it was not a 4: When we arrived, the bedrooms were freezing cold. Since it took time for the rooms to heat up (and we couldn't see instructions for the radiators) the first night was extremely uncomfortable. It would have helped if someone would have turned on the heating beforehand, and it was a shame that our sleep was disturbed because of this. There was a big draught coming through the bedroom and 'balcony', which even let some water through when it rained, and there were a lot of flying insects around which had obviously been let in when previous occupants opened windows. Beds and bedding were super-comfortable, as was the couch. The property was also really nicely-laid out in a way which maximises the space. We enjoyed using the bright and well-lit kitchen! The water in the property smelled extremely strange - from the sink to the bath, to the shower, which again, disrupted the comfort of using the whirlpool bath, or the facilities at all. Since it gets dark early in the winter, it would be helpful if there was more light by the driveway at night - there was a lantern but it was off, and finding the space was difficult, especially because it is up a small hill. Thank you for the small soaps that were thoughtfully provided. We were surprised to see there was no bar of soap or anti-bacterial handwash, which are usually available in self-catering holiday houses. (Also a bin bag, coffee/sugar and some fairy liquid would seem to be basic, for the first night when guest arrives...) The TV video player remote had run out of battery, which meant DVD could not be paused or controlled by remote, which again, if no batteries are provided, cause guests to have to inconvenience themselves to buy new batteries or manage without. We enjoyed our stay in the property, but were disappointed at the issues with the temperature, water, insects and lack of some basic amenities, which let it down. This is a beautiful property, which could be really spectacular if these issues were ironed out.

Since your stay, remedial works have been undertaken to all window in the property, to rectify any issues with draughts or leaks. Work has also been undertaken to investigate any issues regarding the water quality. An electrician has attended to investigate the issues with the exterior lights and unfortunately there is an underground fault, this is due to be attended to shortly. “Only a few small constructive criticisms.”

Holiday apartment was cold on arrival. Not enough glasses in the kitchen. Doors very heavy and slammed if the children were asleep. Dampener required. Very happy with our holiday and would definitely return. Thank you.

Plenty of space for a family of 3 and kitchen utensils/cooking equipment well-stocked (a rare find in self-catering places!). Our only negative feedback would be the lack of children’s play area as advertised, which was one of the reasons we chose this place. The listing said it would be in use by September 2021 but due to the ongoing building works it wasn’t. Overall, lovely stay and well-located to explore lots of areas nearby including Dartmouth, Salcombe and Totnes.

“When we booked the site, the pool and the playground were closed due to Covid, but we booked well over 6 months in advance so we we're hopeful that the facilities would be open by then.”

However to receive communication that the pool and playground were being shut completely for redevelopment meant it wasn't the holiday we hoped for. With a toddler in tow there was literally nothing we could do on site with her - we had to drive to local villages for playgrounds and outdoor space. As lovely as the apartment was, the site was very disappointing for us as a family. The narrow country lanes with high embankments meant cycling or walking local was a risky venture with no room to escape cars. I'm sure it will be better when the redevelopment is complete, but we won't be coming back.

“The apartment was very comfortable and of a high standard.”

Very airy and bright, great kitchen and bathrooms, lots of storage, luxurious beds. My main complaint is that considerable construction was ongoing and there was no playpark for this reason. I am certain it was not stated at the time of booking and it was not brought to our attention by email or otherwise. The advertised play area and outdoor space was our main reason for booking this place. Also, note that you really need to drive everywhere from this location, although its just a 15min drive to loads if great places, like Torcross, Blackpool sands and Dartmouth.

“The hob had no written guide .”

Subsequently we had no hot food for the firs t 24 hours. We were shown photographs of the children's playground which turned out to be closed down. Not good and actually if Sykes were wanting to please their customer they would offer some kind of refund based on the above. One final thing was that we bought our own non stick pans and the hob would not work with these when it finally was working.

“The apartment was spacious, clean and well equipped.”

There was a beautiful view out of the main bedroom window of the fields and hillside. The grounds were immaculate with a gardener tending to them daily. We had our own allocated parking space which was a bit awkward to manoeuvre into as it was accessed via a steep narrow slope but a minor issue. Overall we had a superb holiday. Combined washer dryer very useful. Very close to stunning beaches.
